13.4   What is Finger?

Finger is a method of asking a remote site for some short textual information. Various sites run finger servers. Some examples:

Fingering: will give you
motd@gate.demon.co.uk Demon's message of the day
report@gate.demon.co.uk A short summary report of the current operational status of Demon's main services
status@gate.demon.co.uk Fuller details of when any problems at Demon have been identified and/or fixed
host@post.demon.co.uk A summary of your waiting email. Replace host with your own hostname - so, if you are sample.demon.co.uk you would finger sample@post.demon.co.uk
host+@post.demon.co.uk Full details of waiting email: again, replace host by your own hostname
diskusage@homepages.demon.co.uk Details of how much of your 5 Mb of free webspace you have used
f-prot@complex.is The latest version number of the f-prot virus checker

There is a Finger client built into Turnpike. If you don't have one, try My Little Finger (for Win95): ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/ibmpc/win95/winsock/apps/finger/finger151.zip

(The Tucows site includes a range of Finger clients for Win95).
