13.   A final miscellany

13.10   Why does my modem dial in when I start Windows?

Certain programs have options for automatically connecting to the Net to check for updated content. To prevent this you need to identify the program responsible - it may be a beta version of RealAudio 5 that is being launched in the StartUp folder, or perhaps you have set Internet Explorer to update channel subscriptions automatically. You will then need to disable the option in the program which requests the dial up.

You may also prefer to set Windows never to respond to such requests # to "dial on demand". Go to the Start menu, choose Settings and then select Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click Internet, # and then go to the Connection tab. Click "Never dial a connection", then click OK.
