1.   Introduction

1.3   Where can I find out more?

The first thing to do is to ensure that you know how to get information from Demon if there is a problem that stops news flowing promptly - particularly the important messages about the service that are posted to the demon.announce newsgroup. The latest articles in this newsgroup can be found on the WWW at:

http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/announce/

In addition, it is a good idea to subscribe to the demon.announce mailing list in order to receive these articles via email. Although you will get the messages twice, by email and by news, there are not many of them and they are mostly important.

To do this, send an email to majordomo@demon.net with the words subscribe announce in the body of the message.

If you use Turnpike, you can route this mailing list to appear as a pseudo-newsgroup (see the Help file for details).

We recommend that all newusers subscribe to the demon.answers newsgroup. Print out and read the documents that are regularly posted there, including:

FAQs on modems can be found at

The first of these is the FAQ for the demon.tech.modems newsgroup.

Demon's own FAQs and other help pages can be found at http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/technicallibrary/ and http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/producthelp/. These include information on services, configuration, Turnpike, using FTP, setting passwords, creating your own web site ("home pages"), the Demon proxy server, using POP3 for email and Demon telephone numbers.

Help on a number of topics can also be obtained from support@demon.net - this is a robot (an autoresponder) so don't bother telling it all your problems! To use the service for the first time, send an email to support@demon.net with the word help as the subject line and don't put anything in the body of the message. You will get an email back listing various files that can be mailed to you in a similar way.

Another useful source of help is demon.ip.support.newuser (known as d.i.s.n for short). Check the articles that have arrived in the last week or so - it is quite likely that your questions may already have been asked and answered.

An Internet-wide equivalent to demon.answers is news.announce.newusers (note this one is "newusers", plural). Like demon.answers, you cannot post to it, but very helpful guides to various aspects of Usenet (ie newsgroups) appear there at regular intervals.

FAQs on a very wide range of topics can be found at http://www.faqs.org/

Some further useful FAQs can be found at: http://www.plainfaqs.org.uk/
Most of these are intended for users of Turnpike, but several are more generally relevant.

There are many good books about the Net. Try browsing in your local bookshop or library. There are a number of magazines devoted wholly to the Net, and more general computer magazines have a lot of articles about it. Some newspapers have weekly pull-out sections devoted to computing or the Net.

Demon produce a free guide to educational and safe surfing on the Internet with children: http://www.demon.net/guides/ (currently unavailable due to website reorganisation)
Links to further guidance on this subject can be found at: http://www.iwf.org.uk/public/page.92.htm

Finally, make sure you are aware of Demon's Conditions of Use and various AUPs (Acceptable Use Policies). Details can be found at: http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/producthelp/aup/
A full list of contact phone numbers at Demon can be found at: http://www.demon.net/contactus/telephonenumbers/
