1.   Introduction

1.1   What can I do on the Internet?

You can:
  • Exchange electronic mail (email).
  • Read and/or contribute messages (articles) to any one of some 50,000 newsgroups. These are referred to collectively as Usenet and they cover almost every subject under the sun.
  • Download software and other files using ftp (file transfer protocol).
  • View pages of text and graphics (some including sounds, animations and video clips) from the WWW (World-Wide Web).
  • Have real-time multi-person 'conversations' by using IRC (Internet Relay Chat) or WWW-based chat systems (see Part II).

In using these resources, you will encounter references to many more, including the multi-user games, telnet, RealPlayer broadcasts, Net phones and video conferencing mentioned in Part II of this FAQ].
