Using FTP to upload your own webpages to the Demon homepages server
The screen shots here are from the Win95 version of WS FTP Pro. Instructions for using the 16-bit (Windows 3) version can be found at
http://www.thor2ru.demon.co.uk/demnlib/ws_ftp16.html
| TIP If you are running WS_FTP Pro from a button in the Turnpike Connect program, make sure that you can use WS FTP Pro off-line in order to set it up. To do this, run Turnpike Connect but do not dial up - choose Cancel instead. Then click Configure... Toolbar Buttons. Choose the button number from which you launch WS FTP. Make sure that the box marked Allow only if connected is not checked. Click OK. Now you are ready to set up your FTP client, so click the FTP button in the Connect program. |
When you launch WS FTP, you will see a Session Properties screen something like this. The settings you make here will be saved under the Profile name you choose, so you can easily call them up again when you want to update your homepages.
![]() |
1 | The Profile Name is any nickname you choose to remind you what these particular settings do. You will probably have some profiles ready set up which you can access by clicking the down arrow next to the list box. |
| 2 | The Host Name/Address for the homepages server is homepages.demon.co.uk | |
| 3 | The Host Type should be set to UNIX (standard). | |
| 4 | The USER ID (sometimes called User Name or Login) should be set to the name of your own host. So, if you are somewhere.demon.co.uk, you would enter somewhere. Make sure that the Anonymous box is not checked for this type of FTP. | |
| 5 | The Password must be your Demon dial-up password (not the password you may have set to load Turnpike or other software). Check the Save Pwd box to ensure that whatever you put in here is remembered. |
That's it! The other boxes and tabs can be ignored for most purposes. By the way, if you use Demon's Batch FTP service, when you want to retrieve your files you set up the FTP session properties in exactly the same way, except that the server will be ftp.demon.co.uk.
Next we'll take a look at actually transferring your files to the homepages server.
