3.   Downloading files

3.1   Introduction

Large quantities of software (and other files) are available on the Net, including freeware, shareware, evaluation versions and various free updates.

Software is downloaded using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Most Web browsers use FTP automatically when you request a file to be down-loaded (as opposed to an ordinary Web page for immediate viewing). Just remember to save it to disk, when the option appears, otherwise you will only be able to view the file rather than use it.

However, for large files it is better to use a specialised FTP client for the download [see section 10]. As well as often being faster, an FTP program will often provide extra facilities, including the ability to resume a transfer if you should get disconnected in the middle of a download.

Demon's Batchftp service can be used to fetch files off-line (i.e. after you have disconnected). You can then retrieve them from Demon at leisure: see section 10.4 of this FAQ.
