11.2   What is The Palace?

The Palace describes itself as 'multimedia chat architecture': a graphic version of IRC in which users can design their own rooms and in which they appear as icons (faces or avatars). You have complete control over these, and could use a scan of your own photo, a cartoon, etc. You can move between rooms, interact with the environment, add new objects, and play games with people. To talk to someone else, click on their avatar, and then type in your message - which will appear in a speech bubble on screen. With a sound card, you can even make use of a set of defined sounds. The default site is actually at The Palace, but you can move through a hyperdoor from one server to another, just like clicking on a Web page hyperlink. In fact, you can run your own "Palace".

At least a 28.8K modem is recommended for more than 15 concurrent users on a Mac or PC (Windows essential) - a high spec machine and good connectivity are important for success. When your Palace server software is launched it automatically sends a message that you are on line to the Palace Directory: the message disappears when you log off.
